Rounding out the podium were Olympian ice dance figure skaters Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier and their perseverance through a successful 2022-23 season following Gilles’ ovarian cancer diagnosis, along with wheelchair rugby Paralympian Zak Madell’s entertaining Instagram series, highlighting both his own strength and that of his equipment in running over everyday items.

Other athletes in contention included skateboarder Fay de Fazio Ebert, alpine skier Laurence St-Germain, athletics hammer throwers Ethan Kaztberg and Camryn Rogers, para cyclist Nathan Clement, breaker Philip Kim, boccia athlete Alison Levine and athletics 1500m runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot. Paralympian swimmer Danielle Kisser, with the creation of her do-it-yourself swimming pool that she used to train for the Tokyo Games, was named the inaugural winner in 2020.

About the Canadian Sport Awards

The Canadian Sport Awards were established in 1972 by modern day co-founders True Sport, Canadian Centre for Ethics and Sport, Canada Games Council, Commonwealth Sport Canada, and AthletesCAN to recognize and showcase excellence in Canadian sport. Since then, the CSA evolved over time to become the premier recognition event for national sporting excellence. After the 40th anniversary, the awards experienced a five-year hiatus. In 2017, AthletesCAN successfully acquired the rights to revive this staple event to once again bring together members of the sport community to honour the spirit, drive, and commitment of Canada’s international level athletes, coaches, volunteers, and sport leaders.

About AthletesCAN

AthletesCAN, the association of Canada’s national team athletes, is the only fully independent and most inclusive athlete organization in the country and the first organization of its kind in the world.  As the voice of over 6,000 current and recently retired Canadian national team athletes, AthletesCAN membership spans 68 sports across the Olympic, Paralympic, Pan/Parapan American, and Commonwealth Games, and those currently funded by Sport Canada competing at Senior World Championships. AthletesCAN ensures an athlete-centered sport system by developing athlete leaders who influence sport policy and, as role models, inspire a strong sport culture, through educational resources, support, training and professional development.

Abuse-Free Sport: Canada’s inaugural Sport Integrity Commissioner stepping down

MONTRÉAL – Sarah-Ève Pelletier, Canada’s inaugural Sport Integrity Commissioner, will be stepping down from the role in early 2024.

Commissioner Pelletier’s difficult but personal decision follows a successful launch and first 18 operational months of Abuse-Free Sport, Canada’s first-ever independent safe sport program.

“As Sport Integrity Commissioner, I have been driven by a deep motivation to act as an agent of positive change for the Canadian sport community — with athletes at the very heart of it. Since taking on this role, my passion for this mission has never wavered. I am proud of the groundwork accomplished within the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC). I am certain that it will serve as a springboard for the Abuse-Free Sport program’s evolution, one that can only be beneficial to the advancement of safe sport for all.”

Statement: AthletesCAN, COC Athletes’ Commission support Minister Qualtrough’s launch of the Future of Sport in Canada Commission

TORONTO / OTTAWA – AthletesCAN, the association of Canada’s national team athletes, and the Canadian Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission (COC AC), the elected representatives of Olympians across Canada, commend today’s announcement by Minister Qualtrough on the launch of the Future of Sport in Canada Commission and other sport system commitments as a meaningful step to address the history of systemic abuse in Canadian sport and its underlying causes.

As the representatives of over 6,000 current and recently retired national team athletes covering 68 sports, we support the Minister’s commitment to changing the culture of sport to ensure the safety and protection of athletes through a trauma-informed, independent, long-term initiative to investigate abuse in sport. We applaud Minister Qualtrough’s ongoing leadership and support on this critical issue.

Minister Qualtrough’s elevation of Sport Canada’s Athlete Advisory Committee to a Ministerial Athlete Advisory Committee and commitment to strengthening AthletesCAN’s capacity further demonstrate her dedication to bolstering the athlete voice and empowering athletes within the sport system. In addition, updates including the greater independence of the Abuse-Free Sport program and the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC), the modernization of the Sport Funding and Accountability Framework, the unification of the Sport Integrity Framework, and the creation of an International Working Group on Sport Integrity, are positive contributions to ensuring a safe and well-functioning sport system. These immediate-term measures, in combination with the announcement of the Future of Sport in Canada Commission, are just the latest examples of the Minister continuing to develop a national system that seeks to prioritize athletes’ well-being, both now and in the future.

Today’s announcement builds on the prior commitments of the 2023 Sport Governance Reforms, the stories shared by athletes in hearings held by the Standing Committees on Canadian Heritage and the Status of Women, and the knowledge gained from the first year and a half of operations of Abuse-Free Sport and OSIC.

We recognize that there are athletes calling for a public inquiry. However, we have confidence that the process outlined by the Minister – committed to being trauma-informed and human rights-based – will result in a comprehensive report, a set of actionable items, and athletes feeling seen, heard, and validated.

We, as elected athlete representatives, will continue to advocate for increased accountability measures and look forward to ensuring athletes are at the heart of decision-making. We will continue to work with Minister Qualtrough to ensure all athlete voices are prioritized and heard throughout this process, and to build together a stronger, healthier, and more welcoming sport environment for athletes across the country for years to come.

Sport Solution Clinic supports public accountability in gymnastics

By Amanda Fowler (Supervising Lawyer) and Laura Wade (Program Manager)

In the longest case AthletesCAN and Western Law’s Sport Solution Clinic (the clinic) has ever been involved with, a former Gymnastics Canada coach, Elvira Saadi, has been banned from coaching athletes for life.

This decision is the first to order a lifetime ban for non-sexual abuse in Canada. It is also the first decision to be made public (a marked departure from Gymnastics Canada’s ‘practice’ of keeping them confidential).

Ms. Saadi was found to have abused athletes through physical, emotional and psychological abuse. This included making disparaging comments about the athletes’ bodies, restricting food and water intake, and instilling fear that became normalized within the gymnastics community. This is significant in the growing safe-sport movement as it recognizes that other forms of abuse, such as emotional and psychological abuse, will no longer be tolerated in sport.

All forms of abuse and maltreatment should be taken seriously, and this decision demonstrates that continuous emotional and psychological abuse will not be sanctioned lightly.

To provide the history of the clinic’s involvement with the matter, the investigation into Ms. Saadi by an external investigator began in November 2020 and the investigation report was issued in April 2022. The case manager recommended that the complaints be referred to a Gymnastics Canada Discipline Committee for disciplinary action.

After an unsuccessful mediation, all the parties (each of whom were represented by counsel) agreed the investigation report would be adopted by the panel as findings of fact. This left the panel to decide the applicable sanction.

Prior to that sanctioning process, both Gymnastics Canada and Ms. Saadi brought motions: Gymnastics Canada disputed whether our client was a proper complainant in the proceeding, and Ms. Saadi sought to quash the hearing based on lack of jurisdiction, apprehension of bias and procedural fairness because of an alleged fee agreement where Gymnastics Canada paid the other complainants’ lawyer fees. (Of note, we were never paid by Gymnastics Canada).

Our client filed responding submissions and was successful in dismissing the requests. In fact, Gymnastics Canada had argued that it ‘becomes’ the complainants and should have carriage and control of the proceedings on their behalf going forward. The panel disagreed. Gymnastics Canada was given a participatory role, and not the ‘party’ status it sought.

At the end of the sanctioning process, the panel issued the following sanction:

  1. A full suspension of membership from Gymnastics Canada and any Provincial Governing Body for Gymnastics in Canada for 10 years with credit served for the provisional suspension period.
  2. Required to complete ethics and healthy coaching education as well as demonstrate a full understanding of Gymnastics Canada’s Code of Ethics and Conduct among other conditions for reinstatement.
  3. If the above conditions are met, permitted to return to training coaches only. She is prohibited from having direct contact or engagement with athletes in any manner.

Given the duration of this case (three years, including a 13-month investigation) it was overseen by three cohorts of the clinic’s program managers: graduated program managers Tyler Matthews, Brittany Bates, and Rheanna Geisel, and current program managers Laura Wade, Dylan Romero-Marshall and Hannah Herrington.

The clinic’s supervising lawyer, Amanda Fowler, was the lawyer of record and Dr. Emir Crowne joined us as co-counsel for the motions and sanctioning hearing.

Own the Podium | Snowboard Canada: Unlocking a People-First Culture to be World’s Best

In the ever-evolving world of sport culture, Snowboard Canada has committed to a people-first model

To Dustin Heise’s way of thinking, the scale of ambition is roughly equivalent to, say, watching Max Parrot successfully land a Double Backside Rodeo 1440. Or Mikey Ciccarelli nail a Cab Triple 1620.

Crazy good. Audacious good. Top-of-the-global-charts good.

“We have really rallied around the idea that we don’t want to be anything short of the world-leading snowboard organization,’’ declares Snowboard Canada’s chief executive officer.

“What’s the point if we’re going to do anything short of that?

“So, the Board rallies around that idea, the ecosystem rallies around that, and we define that, so everyone understands what we mean.”

In the ever-evolving world of sport culture, Snowboard Canada has committed to a people-first model to emulate. That organizational-wide belief – not faint hope or convenient lip-service, but actual belief – has, in Heise’s opinion, helped in moving the process along.

Mercedes Nicoll now acts as an athlete council rep, a liaison between coaches, administrators and the athletes. Ten years ago, she never would’ve so much as considered taking the post.

“Just bad blood,’’ Nicoll, a four-time Olympian in half-pipe, explains. “It was really challenging and it’s still challenging for a lot of the alumni who have hurt feelings over how they were treated. It’s still not perfect, things like this take time, but it has come miles in the last 10 years.

“(Former Executive Director) Patrick Jarvis started the change. Then when (CEO) Dustin Heise came in, he was eager to listen and learn, not only to the athletes but to AthletesCAN. He reached out to them in the beginning so that we can all work collaboratively. It’s been a seven-year process and we’re to the point where I think we’re gaining traction of collaboration and working well. “Snowboard isn’t really like other sports in that there is camaraderie even though you’re competing against each other. I think we can really be proud of that.”

CBC Sports | ‘We’re going to get it done’: Canada’s sport minister says money for Paralympic medals is coming

By Devin Heroux

For years Canada’s Para athletes have been asking why they don’t receive money for medals at the Paralympics, while Canadian athletes who win medals at the Olympics receive financial rewards.

On Thursday, Canada’s sports minister said that is soon to change.

In an exclusive interview with CBC Sports on Thursday in Santiago, Chile, ahead of the 2023 Parapan Am Games, Carla Qualtrough said that an announcement is coming.

“We’re going to get it done. I can’t scoop anybody so you’re not going to get any further details from me but I assure you that before Paris there will be some really exciting news on that front, as there should be,” Qualtrough said.

"We all want to be on the same playing field and treated equally. I think overall the bigger thing is recognition. We get some funding but it's not a lot so getting that bonus and show of recognition is huge."

Bo Hedges - AthletesCAN Secretary and Canadian men's wheelchair basketball captain

Willson re-elected, three new members join AthletesCAN Board following 2023 AGM

TORONTO – AthletesCAN, the association of Canada’s national team athletes, is pleased to announce its 2023-24 Board of Directors, following the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Nov. 8.

Artistic Swimming Olympian Erin Willson was re-elected to the Board for a second three-year term and will continue to serve as the organization’s President until the 2024 AGM. In addition, three new national team athletes join the Board for the first time, including retired curler Colin Hodgson and rowing Olympian Susanne Wereley, alongside active cross-country skier Julian Smith.

Hodgson and Smith were elected to three-year terms, while Wereley will serve a one-year appointment, completing the term of alpine skiing Olympian Allison Forsyth, who resigned from the Board in July.

"Congratulations to Colin, Julian and Susanne on being elected to the AthletesCAN Board. We are excited to welcome them to the team under Erin's continued leadership. Each of our Directors brings valuable perspective, skills and passion in advocating for national team athletes and we look forward to working with them over the coming months."

Andrea Proske - AthletesCAN Vice President

AthletesCAN thanks Forsyth and other outgoing directors for their service to the Board, including secretary and wheelchair basketball Paralympian Bo Hedges (also Vice President, 2020-22), current national team lawn bowler Rob Law (Treasurer, 2020-22) and retired Paralympian swimmer Camille Bérubé. The new Officers will be elected from within the Board in the coming weeks.

Following the Board election, Willson presented the annual President’s Report to members, highlighted by some of the major accomplishments of the 2022-23 fiscal year, including:

Prior to the AGM, members also had the opportunity to attend the 2023 AthletesCAN Forum and 46th Canadian Sport Awards from Sept 8-10 in Richmond, B.C. – the first in-person edition held since 2019, featuring a theme of Athletes Building Better Governance.
