TORONTO – AthletesCAN, the association of Canada’s national team athletes, released the following statement in response to an open letter sent to Gymnastics Canada:
We are frustrated with the issues athletes continue to face in the Canadian sport system. National Sport Organizations (NSOs) need to proactively engage in independent third-party evaluations to improve their organizations before these evaluations are required to turn into investigations.
We echo our Gymnastics athletes’ call for an independent investigation, supporting their desire to be able to train and compete in a harassment free environment. Furthermore, we advocate for transparency through the process and meaningful change following the investigation.
The athlete voice must be part of all discussions and involved in decisions to ensure a safe environment for their success. We must all work together to build an athlete centered system within Canada.
